Wild City (2015)
Former cop-turned-bar owner Kwok and his underachieving half-brother befriends a drunken woman, they soon find themselves targeted by both her former lover, a high-powered attorney, and the gangster he employs. A suitcase full of tainted cash enters the picture as Kwok finds himself torn between the gangsters and his former colleagues.
What people think about Wild City
Wild City feels like a veteran crime filmmaker slipping back into his favorite suit: sharp, stylish, and worn with absolute confidence. Ringo Lam turns a simple night-out-gone-wrong into a pulsing, neon-noir chase through Hong Kong’s streets, where every alleyway seems to sweat menace and every calm moment threatens to break into violence. Louis Koo anchors it with a cool, lived-in performance that makes the moral tug-of-war feel personal, not just procedural, while the action lands with that old-school dynamism Lam fans miss—clean, tough, and street-level. If you want a twisty mystery or deep character study, this may feel more like a hardboiled ride than a novel, but if you’re on the fence about a lean, atmospheric thriller that knows exactly how to move, it’s an easy yes.
Wild City is clearly trying to be a throwback Hong Kong crime thriller: bruised ex-cop, messy loyalties, a suitcase of dirty money, and a ticking-clock rescue that keeps the plot moving. The problem is it plays more like a competent genre exercise than a Ringo Lam classic, with familiar beats, thinner character work, and a screenplay that doesn’t build the layered tension or symbolism fans of his ’90s peak might expect. You can also feel the movie smoothing off rougher edges in a way that makes it less distinctive and a bit more “made to travel” than truly personal. If you’re here for Louis Koo’s steady presence and some solid action-and-chase momentum, it delivers enough, but if you want originality, moral complexity, and that signature Lam bite, this may leave you underwhelmed.
