Journey's End (2017)

Journey’s End is a war film that finds its power not in spectacle, but in the unbearable intimacy of waiting—crammed into a muddy dugout where courage looks less like heroics and more like endurance. Saul Dibb stages R.C. Sherriff’s classic with a tightening sense of urgency, letting the period detail and claustrophobic atmosphere do what explosions usually do: make your pulse rise. Sam Claflin gives Captain Stanhope a raw, fraying humanity, while Paul Bettany and Asa Butterfield bring warmth and quiet ache to a brotherhood that’s equal parts tenderness and terror. It’s more chamber drama than action showcase, but if you want an emotionally bracing, deeply acted anti-war story that lingers after the credits, this one earns your attention.

Journey’s End is clearly aiming for a tense, claustrophobic slice of WWI life, trapping you in a dugout with officers who are running out of time, sleep, and sanity. The problem is it often feels like a very faithful, very familiar war-stage drama, hitting expected beats without the punch it’s reaching for. Saul Dibb’s direction can feel a bit boxed-in, which dulls the momentum and sometimes makes the emotions feel observed rather than lived. Still, the performances (especially Sam Claflin and Paul Bettany) bring real grit, so if you like dialogue-driven wartime pressure cookers more than visceral battlefield spectacle, it may work for you; if you want something fresher or more devastating, this might leave you cold.
