Dead Awake (2016)

Dead Awake taps into a primal, universally unsettling fear: the moment your mind is awake but your body won’t move, and something in the dark seems to notice. The film leans hard into that sleep-paralysis dread, building a steady, creepy pressure cooker around Jocelin Donahue’s grounded performance as a woman whose grief turns into an investigation—and then into a fight to simply survive the night. It’s a straightforward, no-frills supernatural thriller that gets mileage out of helplessness, shadowy imagery, and the awful intimacy of being attacked when you can’t even scream. If you want inventive mythology or subtle character drama, this may feel simple, but if you’re in the mood for a scary, direct nightmare that crawls under your skin and stays there when you try to fall asleep, it delivers.

Dead Awake is clearly aiming to tap into the genuinely terrifying idea of sleep paralysis and turn it into a supernatural mystery with a grieving protagonist at the center. The problem is it plays out in a very familiar, straight-to-video way: the pacing drags, the scares lean on repetition, and the story feels underwritten and predictable when it should be escalating into something sharper. Jocelin Donahue does what she can with the material, and a couple of eerie “can’t move, something’s in the room” moments do land, but they’re not enough to make the premise feel fully used. If you’re hoping for inventive horror or a clever thriller, this likely won’t satisfy; if you’re okay with a basic, low-budget night-terror chiller and can handle intense helplessness scenes and heavy substance use, it might pass for a late-night watch.
