I Am a Hero earns its title by taking the well-worn zombie template and jolting it back to life with a nervy, human-scale point of view: not a swaggering badass, but a worn-down man who’s spent years feeling like an extra in his own story. Shinsuke Sato stages the carnage with crackling energy and a wicked sense of timing, letting bursts of dark humor and surprising poignancy peek through the blood spray so it feels like more than just another body-count ride. Yo Oizumi makes Hideo’s fear, denial, and reluctant courage oddly relatable, which gives the action real stakes even when the film is gleefully going for broke. Fair warning: the gore is intense and unflinching, but if you can handle the mess, you’ll get a fast, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt survival thriller that remembers monsters are scary—yet people are complicated.

I Am a Hero is trying to fuse a character-driven midlife meltdown with a full-throttle zombie outbreak, and to its credit it commits hard to both the grim despair and the splattery chaos. Shinsuke Sato stages the action with real momentum and the gore effects are unflinching, but the story often falls back on familiar zombie-movie beats, so you may feel like you’ve seen the “survive, meet strangers, moral dilemma, repeat” rhythm before. The lead performance sells Hideo’s panic and self-loathing, yet the film’s length and conventional plotting can make it drag between standout set pieces. If you want inventive mythology or fresh twists, this might disappoint; if you’re here for intense, well-made carnage with a flawed everyman at the center, it delivers.
