Love (2015)
Murphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with the unstable Electra. Unaware of the seismic effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed.
What people think about Love
Love is special because it treats sex not as decoration or shock, but as the language two people use to try to tell each other the truth—and Gaspar Noé films that language with a fearless, hypnotic beauty that’s hard to shake. Set in a dreamlike Paris and carried by a rush of memory, it’s intimate in the way a late-night confession is intimate: tender, messy, and painfully sincere, with images that feel like they’re pulsing with longing. If you’re open to a romance-drama that’s raw about desire, jealousy, and regret, you’ll find a strangely moving honesty beneath the provocation. It’s absolutely not for everyone—its explicit, unsimulated sex and emotional volatility can be overwhelming—but for the right viewer it’s a bold, bruised love story that lingers like a scent you can’t quite place.
Love is clearly aiming for an unfiltered, immersive portrait of obsession and heartbreak, using explicit sex as the language of intimacy rather than a side dish. The problem is that for many viewers the shock value and voyeuristic presentation end up doing the heavy lifting, while the characters and emotional beats feel thin, repetitive, and a bit self-important. If you’re hoping for a nuanced romance or a drama that earns its devastation through writing and development, this can play like two hours of mood and provocation with not much underneath. Still, if you’re already on Gaspar Noé’s wavelength and can accept graphic, unsimulated sex as the point rather than the distraction, there are moments of raw atmosphere and regret that might land.
