Bayou Caviar is clearly aiming for a sweaty, Southern-fried neo-noir about desperation, power, and a blackmail scheme that spirals out of control. The problem is the storytelling feels tangled and oddly paced, so instead of mounting tension you may find yourself trying to work out who wants what and why it matters. Direction and dialogue often come off amateurish, and the characters are sketched too thinly for the big twists to land with the punch the movie wants.
