Truman (2015)

Truman is special because it treats the biggest subject imaginable—saying goodbye—with a lightness of touch that feels deeply human rather than melodramatic. Set over a few days in Madrid, it follows two old friends and a loyal dog as they drift through conversations, errands, and small encounters that somehow carry the weight of a lifetime, all with a sly, darkly funny warmth. The performances are so natural you stop noticing the acting and start feeling like you’re spending time with real people who use humor the way we all do: to survive what hurts. It’s not the movie to pick if you want a tidy, feel-good escape, but if you’re open to something poignant, compassionate, and quietly uplifting, Truman stays with you in the best way.

Truman is aiming for something quietly human: a few days of friendship, small talk, and tenderness in the shadow of a hard reality, with the dog as the emotional anchor rather than a gimmick. The catch is that its dark, low-key humor can feel more like a coping mechanism than a source of “fun,” so if you’re expecting a crowd-pleasing comedy-drama with big laughs and neat catharsis, this may leave you cold. It’s also deliberately slight—more a collection of moments than a tightly engineered plot—and that can read as insubstantial, especially when the ending hits a couple of minor beats that don’t land as cleanly as the rest. If you’re patient with understated storytelling and value performances and atmosphere over momentum, it’s a lovely, bittersweet hangout; if you want a stronger narrative drive, this isn’t the best use of your time.
