Gerald's Game (2017)
When her husband's sex game goes wrong, Jessie (who is handcuffed to a bed in a remote lake house) faces warped visions, dark secrets and a dire choice.
What people think about Gerald's Game
Gerald’s Game is proof that the most terrifying place a horror film can trap you is inside one person’s mind, and Mike Flanagan turns a single room into an arena of suspense that feels breathlessly alive. Carla Gugino gives a fierce, deeply human performance that keeps the film gripping even when it’s quiet, letting dread build not through jump scares but through the slow, merciless pressure of time, thirst, and memory. The vibe is intimate, nasty, and psychologically sharp—part survival thriller, part reckoning—shot with a clean, confident style that makes every creak and shadow feel personal. It’s not for everyone (the subject matter is heavy and there’s some genuinely unsettling imagery), but if you want horror that’s smart, intense, and anchored by acting that doesn’t let you look away, this one sticks the landing.
Gerald’s Game is trying to turn a nasty, high-concept setup into a psychological survival story about trauma, resilience, and what the mind does when the body can’t move. Mike Flanagan wrings real tension out of the single-location confinement, and Carla Gugino carries the film with a committed, exhausting performance that makes the ordeal feel uncomfortably intimate. But the same “stuck in one room” premise can also feel stagey, with stretches of talky, repetitive inner-dialogue and a pace that drags if you’re not locked into its headspace. If you want a more traditional, plot-driven horror ride, or you’re sensitive to sexual trauma themes and grim bodily dread, this one may feel more punishing than entertaining—even though it does stick the landing better than you might expect.
