Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

Underworld: Blood Wars is at its best when it stops apologizing for being a midnight-movie fever dream and simply leans into what the series does uniquely well: sleek, icy gothic style married to crisp, relentless action. Kate Beckinsale once again makes Selene feel like more than a leather-clad icon—she’s a bruised, driven warrior moving through betrayal and bloodshed with a cool intelligence that gives the carnage a pulse. Director Anna Foerster keeps the vibe moody and metallic, staging fights that are brutal, fast, and satisfyingly operatic, with enough faction politics and dark melodrama to keep the stakes feeling personal. If you’re looking for subtle horror or deep world-building, it may feel like pure propulsion, but if you want a stylish, R-rated shot of vampire-versus-lycan adrenaline, this one delivers the goods.

Underworld: Blood Wars is clearly trying to keep the franchise’s gothic vibe alive while giving Selene one more hard-edged, neon-lit victory lap through vampire politics and Lycan carnage. The problem is it plays like a checklist sequel: lots of lore-dumping, betrayals you can see coming, and action that’s slick but strangely low on adrenaline, so the whole thing can feel routine rather than thrilling. If you’re not already invested in Underworld mythology, the exposition-heavy plotting may feel like homework with gunfire in between. Still, Kate Beckinsale remains a committed, commanding presence, and if you mainly want stylish R-rated monster violence and cold, blue atmosphere, it delivers that reliably—even if it rarely surprises.
