Standoff is the kind of lean, no-nonsense thriller that finds its power in simplicity: one battered house, one wounded protector, one relentless hunter, and a child caught in the crosshairs. Adam Alleca stages the action like a pressure cooker, letting tension build through silence, cramped spaces, and the ugly psychology of two men trying to outlast each other, while Thomas Jane brings bruised humanity to the veteran at the center and Laurence Fishburne gives the villain a cool, predatory intelligence. It’s a modest B-movie in the best sense—professional, tightly contained, and more gripping than flashy—content to earn its suspense the hard way rather than through spectacle. The heavy profanity and bursts of graphic violence mean it’s not for everyone, but if you’re on the fence and want a stripped-down, high-stakes showdown that actually delivers, this one holds its ground.

Standoff wants to be a lean, pressure-cooker thriller about a broken man earning redemption by holding the line against a relentless killer, and the premise is genuinely solid. The problem is it stretches a simple siege into a lot of talky posturing, with pacing that sags and cat-and-mouse beats that can feel more cheesy than tense. If you’re coming for smart staging, sharp writing, or escalating suspense, you may find it dramatically tiresome and a bit clunky.
