Heidi (2015)

What makes Alain Gsponer’s Heidi special is how effortlessly it turns a familiar classic into something that feels newly alive: a film with mountain air in its lungs and real tenderness in its heart. The Swiss Alps are photographed with storybook beauty, but the magic comes from the warmth between characters—especially Anuk Steffen’s bright, unforced Heidi and Bruno Ganz’s gruff grandfather slowly thawing into love. When the story shifts to Frankfurt, the tone becomes more restrained and bittersweet, letting homesickness and friendship do the heavy lifting without slipping into sentimentality. It’s a gentle, emotionally honest family drama with a few mildly harsh moments, so very sensitive kids may need a hand to hold—but for most viewers, it’s the kind of movie that leaves you calmer, kinder, and quietly moved.

Heidi (2015) is clearly aiming for a wholesome, scenic, old-fashioned family drama about kindness, resilience, and the pull of home, and it does deliver postcard-beautiful Alpine imagery and an earnest central performance. The problem is that the storytelling can feel a bit hollow and overly predictable, with pacing that drifts and secondary characters who don’t get much depth beyond their roles in the plot. Depending on the version you watch, the dubbing can also be distracting enough to pull you out of the emotion. If you grew up with richer adaptations and want that same spark and warmth, you may find this one too polite and lightweight—but if you’re mainly after a gentle, visually soothing watch with mild peril and big-hearted intentions, it can still do the job.
