Gangnam Blues (2015)

Gangnam Blues is special because it turns the birth of modern Gangnam into a gritty, tragic gangster epic, where every punch and betrayal feels tied to something bigger than street pride: money, power, and a country reshaping itself. Yoo Ha stages the violence with muscular energy, but it’s the atmosphere that lingers—the smoky rooms, the muddy outskirts, the sense of a city being carved up in backroom deals—captured in handsome, evocative cinematography and period design that make the 1970s feel lived-in and dangerous. Lee Min-ho and Kim Rae-won give the film its bruised heart, grounding the crime thrills in friendship and desperation rather than cartoon villainy, while the story keeps a sharp eye on the elites who profit from the chaos. It’s not for everyone—this is a bleak, hard-edged ride—but if you like crime sagas that are both entertaining and quietly angry about how power really works, it’s an easy recommendation.

It looks polished and has moments of punchy violence and atmosphere, but the story often feels like a checklist of gangster-movie beats rather than something with real surprise or depth. The pacing and execution can be uneven, and if you’re not already sold on Lee Min-ho as a hardened criminal, his casting may pull you out of the drama instead of pulling you in. If you want a fresh, character-driven crime thriller, this may feel too familiar; if you just want a slick, star-led Korean gangster drama with political grime in the background, it’s serviceable.
