The Forgiven (2022)

The Forgiven is the kind of grown-up drama that doesn’t beg for your sympathy so much as earn your attention, using a single terrible mistake to peel back layers of privilege, guilt, and self-deception. John Michael McDonagh stages it with a cool, cutting wit that keeps the villa’s champagne-fueled decadence humming even as something darker presses in from the surrounding mountains, and the contrast is riveting. Ralph Fiennes is superb as a man forced to sit with consequences he’s spent a lifetime dodging, while Jessica Chastain and a terrific ensemble make the party scenes feel both seductive and quietly rotten. It’s talky, morally thorny, and unapologetically adult—so if you want comfort, look elsewhere—but if you’re in the mood for a sharp, atmospheric reckoning, this one lingers.

The Forgiven wants to be a sharp, morally thorny drama about privilege, guilt, and the price of an “accident,” using Morocco’s stunning landscape as a pressure cooker for wealthy Western self-absorption. The problem is it often mistakes unpleasantness for insight: the party-villa sections can feel like an endurance test of bad behavior, while the social critique and redemption arc don’t dig as deep as they think they do. Ralph Fiennes brings real gravity and the film looks terrific, but the pacing is languid and the characters can read more like symbols than people. If you’re not in the mood for a slow burn filled with heavy drinking, harsh language, and deliberately abrasive guests, this may feel more punishing than profound.
