The BFG (2016)

The BFG is one of Spielberg’s gentlest spectacles: a big-hearted bedtime fable where wonder isn’t just decoration, it’s the whole point. Mark Rylance turns the title giant into a tender, lonely soul you can’t help but root for, and Ruby Barnhill gives Sophie the kind of steady courage that makes the friendship at the center feel genuinely earned. The film drifts on luminous visuals and storybook whimsy—dream jars, moonlit rooftops, and a sense that kindness can be its own form of bravery—while still delivering a few kid-sized shivers and peril. It’s not for viewers craving nonstop action or a snappy pace, but if you’re in the mood for a warm, imaginative family adventure with real sweetness in its bones, it’s a lovely place to spend an evening.

The BFG is clearly aiming for a gentle, bedtime-story kind of fantasy—sweet, whimsical, and built around the warmth of an unlikely friendship rather than big thrills. The problem is that it often feels like it’s drifting: long stretches of chit-chat and quirky business slow the momentum to a crawl, so the wonder can curdle into mild tedium if you’re waiting for the story to really take off. It also leans hard into cutesiness, which will charm younger kids but may test the patience of adults expecting peak Spielberg magic or a sharper sense of adventure. Still, Mark Rylance gives the giant real tenderness and personality, and the film is mostly mild in content, so it can work as a calm family watch—just don’t go in expecting a fast, dazzling ride.
