Life Eternal (2015)

Life Eternal is the kind of crime comedy that feels like it was carved out of lived-in streets and bad memories, balancing laugh-out-loud irony with a quiet, bruised melancholy that sneaks up on you. Wolfgang Murnberger’s Austrian sensibility gives the film a wonderfully offbeat, fatalistic vibe, where every conversation seems to carry both a punchline and a lingering regret. Josef Hader is terrific as Brenner—wry, worn-down, and stubbornly human—while Tobias Moretti brings a charged presence that keeps the tension humming even when the film is being wickedly funny. It won’t be for viewers who want a slick, straightforward thriller, but if you like crime stories with personality, bite, and a strangely hopeful aftertaste, this one lingers.

Life Eternal is clearly aiming for a sly, Austrian deadpan blend of crime mystery, dark comedy, and regret-soaked homecoming, with Josef Hader carrying the weary charm of Brenner like he’s allergic to hope. The problem is the storytelling can feel oddly muted: the pacing drifts, the dialogue doesn’t always snap, and the film sometimes plays like it’s going through the motions rather than tightening the screws of its thriller premise. If you’re expecting a punchy, twisty crime ride or the spark of earlier Brenner outings, this one may leave you waiting for a lift that never quite arrives. Still, if you enjoy offbeat, melancholy noir with a low-key sense of humor and you’re happy to sit in the mood rather than chase plot fireworks, there’s enough character and atmosphere to justify the time.
