Within (2016)
A widower, his daughter, and his new wife move into a peaceful neighborhood. At first it appears to be a perfect neighborhood but the family quickly realize that something is not right about their new home.
What people think about Within
Within earns its chills the old-fashioned way: by turning the supposed safety of a picture-perfect suburb into a slow, tightening vise, where every quiet hallway and familiar room starts to feel suspect. Phil Claydon leans hard on crisp cinematography, subtle effects, and especially sound design that seems to creep through the walls, building a tense, watchful atmosphere long before anything explodes into violence. Michael Vartan, Erin Moriarty, and Nadine Velazquez sell the fragile “new family” dynamic with enough sincerity that the dread lands as personal, not just mechanical. It’s true the setup can feel familiar and the characters aren’t deeply layered, but if you want a lean, efficiently made thriller that knows how to make you listen to your own house differently afterward, this one delivers.
Within is clearly aiming for that suburban-nightmare vibe where a “perfect” new home slowly reveals a nasty secret, and it does have a clean, straightforward setup with a capable cast trying to sell the family tension. The problem is the film leans on familiar beats without enough fresh ideas, and the script doesn’t give the characters much depth, which drains the suspense instead of tightening it. If you’re coming for real scares or a clever twist on the home-invasion/hidden-threat formula, this may feel flat and oddly low-stakes for a horror-thriller. It’s best suited to viewers who don’t mind a generic, slow-burn watch and can tolerate some voyeuristic/sexualized moments and moderate violence without expecting the movie to do much with them.
