In a Valley of Violence (2016)

In a Valley of Violence is a lean, mean revenge western that feels both lovingly old-fashioned and slyly modern, the kind of movie that knows exactly how to turn a dusty main street into a pressure cooker. Ti West directs with a storyteller’s patience and a prankster’s grin, letting dread, dark humor, and sudden brutality share the same frame, while the score and sunbaked atmosphere give every stare-down a pulse. Ethan Hawke brings a weary, haunted gravity to the drifter at its center, and John Travolta is terrific as the town’s authority figure—part showman, part ticking time bomb—making even quiet scenes crackle. Fair warning: it’s violent (and there’s animal cruelty that will be a dealbreaker for some), but if you’re in the mood for a sharp, punchy western that plays the classics straight while still surprising you, it’s an easy recommend.

If you’re looking for a fresh twist on the genre or a deeply textured character study, this may feel like a well-made remix rather than something that earns its own legend. Still, Ethan Hawke’s weariness sells the central anger, there are a few satisfyingly staged confrontations, and if you can stomach very brutal violence (including harm to a dog), it can work as a straightforward, mean little western nightcap.
