Cars 3 sneaks up on you by being far more heartfelt than its shiny bodywork suggests, turning a familiar racing world into a surprisingly poignant story about change, pride, and finding a new kind of speed. The animation is dazzling—every track, reflection, and burst of motion feels lovingly tuned—yet it’s the emotional undercurrent that gives the film its real horsepower. Owen Wilson’s McQueen carries the wear-and-tear of legend with charm, while Cristela Alonzo’s Cruz brings a bright, funny energy that keeps the movie buoyant even when it gets reflective. If you’re only looking for nonstop gags and spectacle, it may feel more thoughtful than you expect, but if you want a family film with genuine heart and a satisfying sense of growth, this is the franchise’s best surprise.

Cars 3 is clearly trying to steer the franchise back toward a heartfelt sports comeback story, with Lightning McQueen facing the uncomfortable reality of being outpaced by the new kids. The problem is it often feels like it’s hitting familiar beats on autopilot—predictable turns, a slightly contrived “find yourself” arc, and not much of the spark or originality Pixar is known for. That said, it’s cleaner and more focused than Cars 2, and Cruz Ramirez brings some welcome energy and warmth to the formula. If you’re hoping for a bold, surprising Pixar classic, you may leave underwhelmed—but if you just want a safe, kid-friendly racing movie with a decent message, it’ll do the job.
