Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021) is that rare revival that doesn’t merely recreate a classic—it makes it feel newly alive, with filmmaking so fluid and confident you can sense the sheer joy behind every frame. The romance lands with genuine ache, the street-level tensions carry real weight, and the musical numbers explode with classic Hollywood grandeur while still feeling urgent and contemporary. Rachel Zegler brings a luminous sincerity to María, Ariana DeBose is electric as Anita, and the whole ensemble moves like a living city—vibrant, bruised, and beautiful. If you’re allergic to musicals, it may not convert you, but if you’re even slightly open to the form, this is a stunning, big-hearted piece of cinema that earns its place alongside the greats.

Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021) is clearly aiming to honor the classic while grounding it in a grittier, more lived-in New York, with big, polished musical set pieces and a sincere romantic core. That said, if you’re not already on board with musicals, the pacing can feel long and stop-start, and some of the “updated” choices—like leaving Spanish unsubtitled—may read as meaningful authenticity to some and self-conscious signaling to others. The casting won’t work for everyone, and if you think the original didn’t need touching, this can feel like an impeccably made answer to a question nobody asked.
