Legend (2015)
Suave, charming and volatile, Reggie Kray and his unstable twin brother Ronnie start to leave their mark on the London underworld in the 1960s. Using violence to get what they want, the siblings orchestrate robberies and murders while running nightclubs and protection rackets. With police Detective Leonard "Nipper" Read hot on their heels, the brothers continue their rapid rise to power and achieve tabloid notoriety.
What people think about Legend
Legend is the rare gangster film that feels like a star turn and a time machine at once, powered by Tom Hardy giving two performances so distinct you’ll forget you’re watching one actor. Brian Helgeland paints 1960s London in smoky neon and tailored menace, where glamour and brutality share the same doorway, and the movie moves with the slick confidence of a nightclub act that could turn into a brawl at any second. It’s propulsive, stylish, and strangely intimate, letting the twins’ charm pull you close even as their volatility makes you flinch, with Emily Browning adding a bruised humanity to the chaos. Fair warning: it’s violent and profane in a way that doesn’t soften the edges, but if you like crime thrillers with magnetic performances and a vivid, cinematic pulse, this one is hard to shake.
Legend is clearly trying to be a slick, tabloid-glam gangster rise-and-fall story, powered by Tom Hardy’s dual performance and a sweaty 1960s London atmosphere. The problem is it often feels like two great character sketches trapped inside a messy, stop-start biopic, rushing from incident to incident without digging much deeper than “aren’t these guys fascinatingly awful.” If you want a tightly structured crime thriller with sharp psychology and satisfying narrative momentum, this can feel underwritten and oddly unfocused despite all the violence and swagger. Still, Hardy is magnetic, a few set pieces crackle, and the film looks the part—just don’t expect it to add up to more than an energetic, uneven showcase.
