The Visit (2015)

The Visit is Shyamalan reminding you how much fun it can be to be scared: a lean, cleverly staged nightmare that creeps under your skin with the intimacy of found-footage and the wicked timing of a dark comedy. What starts as an awkward, almost sweet family trip gradually curdles into something you can feel in your shoulders—every hallway too quiet, every smile held a beat too long—while Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould keep it grounded with a believable sibling bond and disarming humor. The movie’s greatest trick is its atmosphere: rural stillness, nighttime rules, and “grandparent” warmth that never quite settles, building tension without needing constant gore. If you don’t like cringe comedy mixed with your dread, it may not be your flavor, but if you want a crowd-pleasing thriller that earns its jolts and keeps you nervously laughing, it’s a terrific ride.

The Visit is Shyamalan trying to deliver a lean, crowd-pleasing “creepy grandparents” rollercoaster using found-footage and a dash of awkward comedy, and on that basic level it does move and it does land a few nasty moments. The problem is the tone wobbles hard—one minute you’re meant to be unsettled, the next you’re stuck with juvenile humor and documentary shtick that can feel more grating than scary. If you’re tired of found-footage habits (convenient cameras, forced “why are they filming?” logic) or you want genuinely original, sustained dread, this may feel like reheated genre leftovers with jump scares doing the heavy lifting. Still, if you can tolerate some cringe for a couple of solid suspense sequences and committed performances from the “grandparents,” it’s a decent, disposable Friday-night thriller rather than a must-see horror.
