Containment (2015)

Containment takes a simple nightmare—waking up to find your own home turned into a prison—and squeezes it until every hallway creak and muffled knock feels like a threat. Neil Mcenery-West turns a drab council block into a pressure cooker of suspicion and solidarity, building dread with smart, stripped-down craft rather than flashy effects, and letting the tension rise at a brisk, unshowy pace. The performances keep it grounded when the premise could go pulpy, with Sheila Reid in particular giving the film a human pulse that’s as compelling as the mystery outside the door. It’s not for viewers who need big-budget spectacle or lots of gore, but if you like sci-fi horror that’s claustrophobic, character-driven, and surprisingly not as nihilistic as it first appears, this one sticks with you.

Containment is clearly aiming for a tight, pressure-cooker quarantine thriller where ordinary neighbors turn on each other as the rules of survival get uglier by the hour. The setup is strong and the grim council-block atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting, with a few tense moments that make you lean in. But once the panic kicks in, the film often falls back on familiar genre dialogue and thin character writing, and the performances don’t always rise above the material, so it can feel more like a compact exercise than a truly gripping descent. If you want deep characterization, sharp social commentary, or a fresh twist on outbreak stories, you’ll likely come away underwhelmed; if you’re happy with a small-scale, contained (yes) thriller that’s more mood than meat, it’ll do the job.
