Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is special because it treats war reporting as both a surreal, darkly funny adventure and a genuinely sobering reckoning, letting you laugh and wince in the same breath. Tina Fey gives one of her most engaging performances, sharpening her comic instincts into something more lived-in and human as her character learns how quickly “just doing your job” can become a way of life. The film has a restless, boots-on-the-ground vibe—part newsroom satire, part culture shock travelogue—peppered with vivid Kabul texture and terrific supporting turns from Margot Robbie and Billy Bob Thornton. It’s not for everyone given the R-rated language, partying, and stark war imagery, but if you like smart, adult dramedies that find humor without dodging the cost, it’s an easy one to recommend.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is trying to walk a tricky line: a fish-out-of-water comedy about a journalist finding her footing, wrapped around the very real ugliness and absurdity of a war zone. When it works, Tina Fey’s grounded likability, a few sharp observations about media culture, and some genuinely tense moments keep it watchable. The problem is the film can’t decide what it wants to be, bouncing from party-girl satire to romance to sobering violence in a way that often feels glib, predictable, and a bit narrow in perspective. If you want a thoughtful war drama or a consistently funny comedy, this may frustrate you; if you’re okay with an uneven, R-rated “based-on-real-life” story that’s more about the reporter’s adrenaline and ambition than Afghanistan itself, you’ll get more out of it.
