Empire of Lust is the kind of historical romance that doesn’t merely dress up court intrigue in silk robes—it lets desire and ambition bleed into each other until you can’t tell which is more dangerous. Set against the volatile early Joseon dynasty, it carries the weight of real political stakes while staying fiercely intimate, anchored by commanding performances from Jang Hyuk and Shin Ha-kyun and a simmering, wounded presence from Kang Hanna. The film’s vibe is sensual, operatic, and morally thorny, with lavish period detail and a steady sense that every glance or favor has a price. It’s not for the faint of heart—there’s explicit sex and nudity, and the emotional temperature runs high—but if you’re drawn to adult historical dramas where power games and passion are equally ruthless, this one has a dark, addictive pull.

Empire of Lust wants to be a sweeping Joseon-era tragedy where political ambition and personal desire poison everything they touch, and it does commit to that adult, operatic tone. The problem is it often leans harder on explicit sex and melodrama than on clear, gripping political storytelling, so if you’re expecting a sharp historical thriller, it can feel messy and more provocative than profound. Character motivations can come off bluntly “fated” rather than earned, which dulls the emotional impact even when the stakes are supposedly life-and-death. That said, the cast brings intensity and the production has a grim, sensual atmosphere, so it may work for viewers who want a steamy, tragic power-and-revenge drama and don’t mind that subtlety isn’t really the point.
