Sing Street (2016)

Sing Street is one of those rare coming-of-age films that feels like a rush of oxygen: funny, tender, and powered by songs so catchy you’ll swear they’ve been living in your head since the ’80s. John Carney turns a familiar setup into something buoyant and personal, capturing how music can become a lifeline when home is tense and school is unforgiving, and how first love can make you brave in ways you didn’t know you needed. The young cast is disarmingly natural—especially Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Lucy Boynton—and the movie’s Dublin grit is softened by an infectious optimism that never feels fake. Sing Street is clearly trying to be a warm, scrappy 80s coming-of-age escape story where music becomes a lifeline and first love feels like the whole world. It mostly works on charm, catchy original songs, and an affectionate Dublin backdrop, but the plot hits familiar beats and rarely surprises, so if you’re allergic to predictable “form a band, find yourself” arcs, you may feel ahead of it the entire time. The movie also asks you to buy into a band that levels up a little too quickly, and a couple of side elements feel more like box-ticking than fully lived-in characters.
