American Made (2017)

American Made is the kind of true-crime joyride that reminds you movies can be wildly entertaining even when they’re spiraling toward disaster, and Doug Liman shoots it with a fizzy, forward-leaning momentum that rarely lets you catch your breath. Tom Cruise is in peak charm mode as Barry Seal, selling the absurdity of a suburban dad juggling covert ops and cartel cash with a grin that’s funny until it’s frightening. The film’s tone is a slick, sunburnt 1980s caper—part comedy, part crime saga—where the thrill comes from watching one man’s luck and recklessness snowball into something too big to control. It’s not for viewers who want a sober, deeply investigative take (or who are put off by strong language, sex, and drug-world violence), but if you’re on the fence and craving a stylish, nervy ride, this one delivers.

American Made is clearly aiming to be a fast, funny, slickly told “true story” about a regular guy stumbling into an absurdly high-stakes world of CIA games and cartel money, and on that surface level it mostly delivers. The problem is the film’s breezy, music-video pace and wink-at-the-audience tone keep skimming past the darker consequences, so if you’re looking for a serious, morally thorny exploration of politics and corruption, this will feel lightweight. It also leans on familiar rise-and-fall crime-movie beats, which can make it feel more like a greatest-hits remix than something genuinely sharp or surprising. Still, Tom Cruise’s charisma and Liman’s energetic direction make it an easy watch if you just want a stylish, profane roller coaster rather than a deep reckoning.
