Race (2016)

Race earns its title by turning a familiar underdog story into something rarer: a rousing sports drama that never forgets the weight of history pressing down on every stride. Stephan James is terrific as Jesse Owens, carrying the film with a quiet, focused intensity, while Jason Sudeikis brings an unexpectedly grounded warmth to the coach-athlete bond that keeps the movie human when the world around it turns political. The vibe is classic, big-canvas inspiration—stadiums, headlines, and tense moral stakes—but it’s also thoughtful about the uncomfortable truth that a victory on the world stage doesn’t magically fix the injustices waiting back home. If you want a hard-edged, experimental biopic, this may feel traditional, but if you’re on the fence and crave an engaging, uplifting true story with real bite beneath the triumph, it’s absolutely worth the watch.

Race is clearly trying to be an inspiring, accessible biopic about Jesse Owens toppling Nazi propaganda with sheer talent, and it delivers the basic beats cleanly and respectfully. The problem is it plays things so safe and conventional that a story this explosive can feel oddly workmanlike, with conflicts introduced, resolved, and moved past in a way that rarely surprises or cuts deep. If you want a nuanced, messy look at Owens, American racism, and the politics of Berlin, you may find this too smoothed-over and emotionally restrained. Still, the performances (especially Stephan James) are solid, the sports sequences are watchable, and it’s a PG-13, straightforward history-drama that works best if you’re in the mood for an uplifting, by-the-numbers crowd-pleaser rather than a challenging one.
