The Walk (2015)

The Walk is one of those rare films that makes you feel the pure, childlike wonder of watching someone attempt the impossible, and it does it with the craftsmanship of a great old-fashioned crowd-pleaser. Robert Zemeckis turns Philippe Petit’s real-life feat into a buoyant, suspenseful adventure, using breathtaking visuals to put you up in the air with him while Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings an earnest, charismatic spark to the dreamer at the center of it all. The tone is playful and romantic about obsession and artistry, building toward a spectacle that’s as nerve-tightening as it is exhilarating. If you’re looking for a grounded, grim historical drama, this isn’t that—but if you want an entertaining, beautifully made rush that earns its awe, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

The Walk clearly wants to be a buoyant, old-school crowd-pleaser about a daring dream, and when it finally gets Philippe Petit up in the air, it delivers genuine spectacle and vertigo-inducing thrills. The problem is you spend a lot of time getting there, wading through a thinly written first half that leans hard on chatty, intrusive narration and feels padded to feature length. The accents and broad character beats can also pull you out of the moment, making the whole thing feel more like a glossy reenactment than a gripping drama. If you’re here mainly for the high-wire sequence and can tolerate a lightweight script, you’ll get your money’s worth; if you want sharp storytelling and emotional depth throughout, this may test your patience.
