Man in Love (2014)

What people think about Man in Love
Man in Love is special because it takes a man you’re primed to judge—a rough, middle-aged debt collector—and patiently reveals the aching humanity underneath, until you realize you’ve been rooting for him before you even meant to. Director Han Dong-wook lets the romance grow out of uncomfortable beginnings into something unexpectedly tender, mixing bruised realism with moments of disarming sweetness that feel earned rather than manufactured. Hwang Jung-min gives a beautifully raw performance, turning Tae-il’s bluster into a kind of desperate, late-blooming sincerity, while Han Hye-jin grounds the film with quiet strength and wary intelligence. It’s a melodrama at heart and it doesn’t pretend otherwise, so if you’re allergic to tearjerkers you may resist it—but if you want a love story about flawed people reaching for decency when time is running out, this one hits hard.
Man in Love is clearly aiming for a rough-edged redemption romance: a small-time thug gets a late-in-life wake-up call and tries to become worthy of someone good. The problem is the setup asks you to swallow a pretty ugly power imbalance—dating tied to debt relief—and if that premise makes your skin crawl, the film doesn’t fully smooth it over, even when it turns tender. It also leans hard on familiar melodrama beats (terminal illness, tear-jerker turns), so if you’re allergic to emotional manipulation or predictable plotting, you’ll feel it coming a mile away. Still, Hwang Jung-min brings enough bruised humanity to make the character watchable, and if you can accept the ethically messy starting point, there’s a sincere, old-school romantic payoff waiting for you.
