Blind Massage (2014)
The employees of a massage parlour share a close bond with each other as they all share a trait in common, they are all visually impaired.
What people think about Blind Massage
Blind Massage is special because it asks you to experience a world through touch, sound, and longing, and Lou Ye films it with such intimate, restless empathy that the massage parlor becomes a whole universe of friendship, pride, jealousy, and hope. Rather than treating its visually impaired characters as symbols, it gives them messy, funny, erotic, bruisingly human inner lives, letting romance and heartbreak unfold with the same urgency as earning a living. The vibe is raw and immersive—often tender, sometimes abrasive—carried by terrific performances (especially Qin Hao’s quietly magnetic charm) and a sense of lived-in authenticity that lingers after the credits. It’s not a comfort watch and it can be sexually frank and emotionally intense, but if you’re on the fence and want a drama that feels bracingly alive, this one earns your attention.
Blind Massage is clearly trying to humanize a community you rarely see on screen, using the massage clinic as a hub for messy, ordinary longings—love, pride, jealousy, and the need to be seen beyond disability. Lou Ye shoots it with an intimate, sensory realism that can feel raw and immersive, but it’s also deliberately chaotic: lots of characters, overlapping storylines, and emotional spikes that don’t always build to neat payoffs. If you need a tight plot, likable arcs, or a comforting “inspirational” tone, this will likely frustrate you, and the sexual and violent undercurrents can be confronting rather than cathartic. If you’re up for a challenging, adult drama that prioritizes atmosphere and empathy over tidiness, there’s real power here even when it’s uncomfortable.
