Rise of the Legend (2014)

Rise of the Legend takes a familiar folk-hero origin and makes it feel freshly alive, powered by a gritty late–Qing Dynasty atmosphere where every alleyway seems to sweat corruption and consequence. Roy Chow stages the action with a muscular clarity and visual flair—fights land with real weight, the camerawork moves like it has a pulse, and the whole film carries the rousing momentum of a throwback epic without feeling dusty. Eddie Peng brings a hungry, human intensity to Fei, while Sammo Hung adds gravitas that makes the mentorship and moral stakes resonate beyond the bruises. It is darker and more crime-soaked than some martial-arts crowd-pleasers, with violence and vice front and center, but if you want stylish, frequently thrilling kung fu drama with real cinematic swagger, this one earns your time.

Rise of the Legend wants to be a gritty, crime-soaked origin story for Wong Fei-hung, mixing underworld politics with big, bruising martial-arts set pieces. When it sticks to the fighting, it delivers: Eddie Peng commits physically, the choreography is punchy, and the late-Qing port-city grime gives the movie a tough atmosphere. The problem is the storytelling in between—lots of flashbacks, blunt betrayals, and thinly sketched characters that make the drama feel more like connective tissue than something you’re meant to care about. If you’re here for clean, character-driven drama or humor, this will feel cold and simplistic; if you just want relentless action with a dark crime backdrop, you’ll probably get your money’s worth.
