David Freyne gives the genre a bruised, intelligent pulse—part horror-thriller, part moral drama—where the tension comes as much from stares in the street and simmering politics as it does from sudden violence. Elliot Page, Sam Keeley, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor ground the premise in raw, human ache, so the film’s scares land with emotional weight instead of hollow shock. It’s not for viewers craving relentless carnage or easy answers, but if you want science fiction that’s suspenseful, resonant, and genuinely thought-provoking, this one lingers.

The Cured is clearly aiming for a smarter, more human take on the zombie genre, using the “after the cure” premise to dig into guilt, stigma, and what society does with people it’s scared of. When it works, it’s tense and unsettling in a grounded way, with strong performances that sell the trauma and moral messiness. But don’t expect relentless horror thrills or a clean, propulsive plot: it can be slow, a bit uneven, and it leans on familiar outbreak beats even while trying to say something bigger. If you’re in the mood for a talkier, politically tinged drama with bursts of violence rather than a straight-up zombie rollercoaster, this might land; if not, it may feel like a great idea that doesn’t fully come together.
