Where Is Anne Frank feels special because it dares to approach a story we think we already know through a burst of imaginative animation, letting Anne’s words quite literally breathe again in the form of Kitty—her fiery, funny, aching “imaginary” friend. Ari Folman’s visuals have a storybook boldness that can pivot, without warning, into nightmare imagery, capturing both the wonder of youth and the horror history demands we not soften. The tone is tender and urgent, moving between fantasy and reality with an eloquence that makes Anne’s legacy feel present-tense, not museum-glass distant, and it finds a way to connect memory to the moral weather of today’s Europe. It isn’t an easy watch and the stylization won’t be for everyone, but if you’re open to an animated drama that treats its subject with real sensitivity while still taking creative risks, it’s quietly powerful.

Where Is Anne Frank is clearly trying to make Anne’s story accessible to younger viewers by using Kitty as a lively guide and linking the Holocaust’s lessons to today’s refugee crisis, which is an admirable aim. The problem is that the framing device and modern subplot can feel clunky and undercooked, so the film sometimes plays more like a well-intentioned lesson than a fully satisfying drama. Pacing is uneven and the emotional beats don’t always land with the weight you’d expect from the subject, even though the animation is often striking and the historical imagery is thoughtfully handled. If you want a focused, deeply immersive Anne Frank adaptation, this may frustrate you, but if you’re open to a stylized, educational approach that sparks conversation, it still has value.
