High Strung (2016)
When a hip hop violinist busking in the New York subway encounters a classical dancer on scholarship at the Manhattan Conservatory of the Arts, sparks fly. With the help of a hip hop dance crew they must find a common ground while preparing for a competition that could change their lives forever.
What people think about High Strung
High Strung is the kind of movie that wins you over on pure momentum: a bustling New York backdrop, a violin that can sing over subway noise, and dance sequences staged with the bright, breathless thrill of performers who have something to prove. It’s less interested in reinventing romance than in letting chemistry happen through movement—ballet lines colliding with hip-hop swagger until the whole thing starts to feel like a concert you can watch with your eyes. Keenan Kampa and Nicholas Galitzine anchor it with earnest charm, while the choreography and music do the real storytelling, turning rehearsals and showdowns into small fireworks. If you need razor-sharp plotting, you may find it familiar, but if you’re on the fence and craving a joyful, energetic showcase of talent, this one is easy to say yes to.
High Strung is clearly aiming for a glossy, crowd-pleasing mash-up of ballet, hip-hop, and romance, with New York as a dream-factory backdrop and a “follow your passion” message. The problem is the story and dialogue are as paint-by-numbers as they come, leaning hard on clichés, convenient setbacks, and melodrama that can feel more silly than stirring if you’re picky about writing. If you need believable character choices and fresh plotting, this will likely test your patience, even at a brisk runtime. But if you’re mainly here for attractive leads, upbeat dance/violin performances, and a low-stakes PG comfort watch, it delivers enough energy to coast on the talent and choreography.
