A Monster Calls (2016)

A Monster Calls is the rare fantasy that doesn’t use wonder as an escape, but as a lantern—lighting up feelings most movies only gesture at. J.A. Bayona conjures a midnight fable with the tactile beauty of a storybook and the emotional honesty of real grief, anchored by Lewis MacDougall’s raw, quietly devastating performance and the stern tenderness Sigourney Weaver brings as the grandmother you slowly come to understand. The film’s tone is darkly magical and deeply humane, blending startling imagery with a compassion that sneaks up on you, until you realize it’s been talking directly to the parts you keep guarded. It is, however, emotionally heavy and sometimes scary, so if you’re not ready for a cathartic cry, save it for a night when you are—because when it hits, it hits with purpose.

A Monster Calls is clearly aiming to use fantasy as a safe doorway into grief, guilt, and the messy truths kids aren’t allowed to say out loud, and that intention is sincere. The problem is it can feel so solemn and carefully “important” that the emotion gets boxed in by grandeur, familiar beats, and a polished, slightly impersonal style that keeps you at arm’s length. If you’re hoping for a lighter family fantasy or an adventure-first story, this is more of an emotionally heavy drama with occasional scary imagery and a lot of sadness baked in. Still, the performances are strong and the visual storytelling has real beauty, so if you’re in the mood for a serious, tear-jerking fable, it may land exactly as intended.
