Fist Fight (2017)

Fist Fight is the kind of shameless, high-octane studio comedy that commits so hard to its ridiculous premise you can’t help but admire the nerve. Charlie Day’s tightly-wound panic and Ice Cube’s granite-stare menace make for a perfectly mismatched pairing, and the movie wrings real laughs from watching a supposedly “responsible” adult world collapse into playground logic inside an already anarchic high school. The vibe is loud, profane, and gleefully chaotic—more like a pressure valve releasing than a carefully polished satire—and when it leans into that rowdy energy, it becomes a surprisingly sturdy crowd-pleaser. If you’re allergic to R-rated crudity or want subtle character comedy, this won’t convert you, but if you’re on the fence and craving a brisk, mean-spirited-in-a-funny-way laugh riot, it delivers.

Fist Fight is clearly aiming for a throwback, anything-goes schoolyard farce where a simple premise escalates into total chaos, and it does have a game cast and a few solid physical-comedy moments. The problem is it stretches that one joke way past its breaking point, leaning hard on shouting, crude gags, and repetitive setups until the energy starts feeling more exhausting than funny. If you’re not into mean-spirited, R-rated humor and cartoonishly destructive mayhem, this will likely come off as loud, sour, and predictable rather than cathartic. But if you enjoy Charlie Day panic-spiraling for 90 minutes and don’t mind comedy that’s more abrasive than clever, you’ll probably find enough dumb fun to coast on.
