The Sand (2015)

The Sand is the kind of gloriously silly creature-feature that takes one absurd, high-concept idea—“the beach itself is deadly”—and commits to it with real pep, turning a hangover comedy setup into a tight little survival carnival. Director Isaac Gabaeff keeps the pacing snappy and the tone playfully nasty, so the scares land, the gore is satisfyingly squirmy, and the jokes feel like nervous laughter you earn rather than punchlines you’re fed. What makes it work is how quickly you start rooting for these stranded grads as they improvise solutions with whatever’s nearby, letting the movie’s charm come from scrappy problem-solving and just-human-enough bickering. It’s not for viewers who want prestige horror or subtlety, but if you’re in the mood for a fun, mean-spirited beach-nightmare with sci-fi weirdness and a wink in its eye, it’s an easy recommendation.

The Sand is clearly trying to be a cheeky, B-movie creature feature where a simple “the ground is lava” setup turns a beach party into a survival puzzle. The problem is the execution often looks and feels like a low-budget TV skit: the effects are ropey, the tension comes in bursts rather than building, and the characters are mostly there to be shuffled into the next kill. If you can’t tolerate bargain-bin CGI and you’re hoping for sharp scares or clever sci-fi, this will test your patience. But if you like dumb-fun horror with a goofy premise, a few gnarly moments, and you’re happy to laugh at the limitations, it can work as a lightweight late-night watch.
