Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
Years after resigning command of an elite military police unit, the nomadic, righter-of-wrongs Reacher is drawn back into the life he left behind when his friend and successor, Major Susan Turner is framed for espionage. Reacher will stop at nothing to prove her innocence and to expose the real perpetrators behind the killings of his former soldiers.
What people think about Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
What makes Jack Reacher: Never Go Back click is its clean, old-school promise: drop Tom Cruise’s blunt-force moral compass into a crooked system and let the sparks fly. Edward Zwick keeps the movie moving with a brisk, street-level vibe—more fists, foot chases, and hard stares than flashy spectacle—while Cruise sells Reacher as a man who doesn’t so much investigate wrongdoing as physically remove it. Cobie Smulders brings a tough, grounded counterweight, giving the action a welcome sense of partnership rather than mere tagging along. It’s not a reinvention of the genre and it can feel comfortably familiar, but if you want a watchable, no-nonsense thriller that plays like a satisfying popcorn night out, it delivers.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back wants to deliver a clean, no-nonsense conspiracy thriller with Reacher bulldozing through corruption to clear an ally’s name, and on paper that’s exactly the kind of sturdy, pulpy fun this series should be. The problem is it plays like a checklist sequel: the plot telegraphs its turns early, the tension rarely spikes, and the action is serviceable rather than the sharp, memorable bruiser stuff you’re hoping for. Tom Cruise still sells Reacher’s relentless competence, and Cobie Smulders brings welcome grit, but the movie’s overall vibe is more “busy and bland” than “lean and thrilling.” If you want a straightforward, background-friendly action crime story, it’ll do; if you loved the first film’s bite and personality, this one may feel strangely forgettable.
