Tolkien is special because it treats the birth of imagination as something earned—through friendship, first love, and the bruising pressures of a world sliding into war—rather than as a tidy myth of genius. Nicholas Hoult gives Tolkien a restless, searching warmth, and Lily Collins meets him with a romantic spark that feels lived-in, not storybook, all wrapped in handsome period craftsmanship that makes classrooms, parlors, and trenches feel tactile and immediate. The film’s vibe is earnest and elegiac, less a fantasy-adjacent origin story than a tender portrait of how art can grow out of loyalty and loss. If you want a brisk, lore-heavy celebration of Middle-earth you may find it gentler than expected, but if you’re in the mood for an emotionally sincere drama about the fellowship behind the writer, it’s quietly persuasive and deeply watchable.

Tolkien is clearly trying to be an earnest origin story, stitching together friendship, first love, and the trauma of WWI to show how a young philologist became a storyteller. The problem is it often plays like a polite, checkbox biopic—handsomely mounted but a bit plodding, with on-the-nose “this inspired Middle-earth” moments that can feel reductive rather than illuminating. If you’re hoping for the strange, mythic spark of Tolkien’s imagination on screen, or a more daring portrait of his inner life, this may leave you underfed.
