Death Note Relight 2: L’s Successors distills the series’ late-game chess match into a lean, high-tension thriller, where every conversation feels like a trap being set and every calm smile hides a knife. Director Tetsuro Araki keeps the atmosphere razor-sharp—moody, propulsive, and deliciously paranoid—while the new perspective and added footage give familiar turns a fresh, slightly haunting edge. Mamoru Miyano’s Light remains mesmerizing in that way only a great villain-protagonist can be, and Ryuk’s watchful presence adds a darkly playful chill to the proceedings. It is, unapologetically, made for viewers who already know Death Note’s world, but if you’re on the fence and want a concentrated hit of its smartest mind games and moral dread, this is an irresistibly efficient way back in.

Death Note Relight 2: L’s Successors is trying to give the back half of the series a slick, movie-length refresher, reframed through Ryuk’s perspective and anchored by Near stepping into L’s shadow. The problem is it’s still mostly a recap, so if you’re hoping for a truly new chapter, the “new footage” won’t feel substantial enough to justify the runtime. The compression also blunts some of the tension and character nuance that made these episodes land, turning intricate mind games into a highlights reel. If you want a streamlined revisit with familiar voice work and a darker, punchy mood, it’ll do the job; if you value the slow-burn chess match and emotional buildup, stick with the original episodes.
