Friend Request (2016)

Friend Request takes a modern anxiety we all recognize—the fragile, performative comfort of being “connected”—and turns it into a slick, mean-spirited little roller coaster that’s far more visually inventive than its premise suggests. Director Simon Verhoeven stages the scares with real style, letting screens glow like haunted mirrors and using punchy practical effects that give the supernatural moments a nasty, tactile bite. The vibe is glossy campus horror with a midnight-movie pulse: quick, cruel, frequently chilling, and unapologetically tuned for jump-scare adrenaline rather than slow-burn dread. It won’t convert anyone who hates social-media horror or prefers subtlety, but if you want an imaginative, crowd-pleasing thriller that knows how to push buttons, this one delivers.

Friend Request wants to mash up modern social-media anxiety with a glossy supernatural curse story, and on paper that’s a solid hook for a teen horror thriller. The problem is it leans hard on familiar jump-scare rhythms and shaky logic, so the characters often make choices that feel more like the script needs them to than anything a real person would do. The pacing also drags as it escalates, with an overlong final stretch that mistakes “louder and weirder” for genuinely scarier.
