Parasyte: Part 1 (2014)
Humanity is suffering from a series of mysterious murders across the globe, known as the 'Mincemeat murders'. High school student Izumi Shinichi has a parasite living off him, having replaced his right hand, and he might be the discoverer of truth.
What people think about Parasyte: Part 1
Parasyte: Part 1 is the rare sci-fi horror that feels both wildly imaginative and surprisingly human, turning a killer premise into a tense, darkly funny ride with real emotional weight. Takashi Yamazaki stages the body-horror set pieces with gleeful inventiveness—creature effects that are nasty, memorable, and often jaw-dropping—yet he keeps the storytelling clean and propulsive, so you’re never lost, just hooked. The vibe is a smart, pulpy nightmare: bursts of action and dread, a streak of black comedy, and an undercurrent of coming-of-age drama as a teenager tries to stay himself while something inhuman shares his body. It’s not for the squeamish, but if you can handle the gore, it’s an entertaining, oddly thoughtful monster movie that earns its shocks and leaves you eager for what comes next.
Parasyte: Part 1 is clearly trying to translate the manga’s gnarly body-horror and moral questions into a live-action sci‑fi thriller, with a genuinely intriguing central hook: a kid and his parasite sharing one body and arguing about what “human” even means. The problem is it often plays like a very expensive prologue—pacing can drag early on, action beats come in bursts rather than a steady build, and several of the alien characters feel more like plot devices than personalities. If you need a movie to feel complete on its own, or you’re coming primarily for slick monster action, this may test your patience. But if you can handle heavy gore and you’re happy to treat it as a setup chapter, the practical effects and the odd-couple dynamic with Migi do provide some solid, memorable moments.
