Hungry Hearts (2015)
The relationship of a couple who meet by chance in New York City is put to the test when they encounter a life or death circumstance.
What people think about Hungry Hearts
Hungry Hearts is special because it takes the most intimate of settings—a new marriage, a newborn, a small apartment—and turns it into a pressure cooker you can’t look away from, where love and fear start speaking the same language. Saverio Costanzo directs with a tense, close-quartered intensity that makes New York feel less like a city than a state of mind, and the film’s atmosphere tightens scene by scene without resorting to cheap shocks. Adam Driver brings grounded, aching practicality to a man watching his family slip out of reach, while Alba Rohrwacher is mesmerizing as a mother whose devotion curdles into something frighteningly absolute. It’s not an easy watch, especially for parents or anyone sensitive to domestic conflict, but if you want a drama that feels original, emotionally ruthless, and uncommonly alive, this one earns your nerves.
Hungry Hearts is clearly aiming for an intimate, nerve-shredding portrait of love curdling into fear, using parenting anxiety and mental illness as the pressure cooker. The problem is it can feel frustratingly opaque and self-serious, with character choices that may strike you as more “the script needs this” than emotionally earned, and the pacing leans on prolonged tension rather than satisfying escalation. If you need psychological drama to be plausible, clearly motivated, and cathartic, this one may leave you irritated rather than moved. That said, the performances are committed and the claustrophobic New York intimacy is effective, so if you can tolerate ambiguity and discomfort, it might still get under your skin.
