Viena and the Fantomes (2020)

Viena and the Fantomes feels like a lost 80s tour diary brought to life: hazy neon, dusty highways, and the thrum of post-punk ambition hanging in the air. Its greatest pleasure is the mood—artfully observed and gorgeously shot—capturing the romance and rot of life on the road without turning it into a glossy myth. Dakota Fanning anchors the film with a quietly compelling performance, making Viena’s pull between loyalty, desire, and self-preservation feel intimate rather than melodramatic. It’s more of a vibe-forward, thoughtful character piece than a plot-driven crowd-pleaser, so if you need big twists or a conventional music biopic arc, it may not hit—but if you want something unique that lingers like a favorite song you can’t quite shake, it’s worth the trip.

Viena and the Fantomes clearly wants to be a moody, neon-lit 80s tour diary about loyalty, desire, and the cost of chasing a band’s “big break.” The problem is it often drifts like a half-remembered dream: the story feels thin, the pacing is lethargic, and the characters rarely deepen enough for the supposed love triangle to land with any real punch. If you’re coming for a music-driven ride, you may be frustrated by how little the film actually delivers on the band element, leaving the vibe to do most of the heavy lifting.
