What people think about Firestorm
Firestorm is Hong Kong action cinema turned up to a roar: a muscular, big-city thriller that doesn’t just stage mayhem, it uses it to squeeze a moral dilemma until it hurts. Andy Lau is riveting as a veteran cop pushed past the edge, and Gordon Lam brings a volatile, human tension that keeps the cat-and-mouse game feeling personal even as the set pieces explode into full-scale urban warfare. Director Alan Yuen keeps the pace lean and propulsive, with shootouts and chases that feel engineered, not noisy, and characters whose choices land with real weight. Fair warning: it’s grim and often brutal, with severe violence that won’t be for everyone—but if you want a hard-edged crime thriller that hits like a gut punch and moves like a bullet, this one delivers.
Firestorm is clearly trying to be a no-holds-barred Hong Kong crime thriller: big daylight heists, dirty-cop moral rot, and a citywide finale designed to leave you rattled. The problem is it often confuses volume for tension, piling on brutal violence and spectacle while the characters stay thin and the story strains credibility, so the emotional beats can feel more forced than earned. The CGI-heavy chaos doesn’t always blend well, which makes some “huge” moments look less gripping than they should. If you’re here for Andy Lau’s intensity and relentless action, you’ll get your money’s worth, but if you need smart plotting, believable motivations, or violence that feels purposeful rather than punishing, this one probably isn’t for you.
