Annabelle (2014)

Annabelle works best as a sleek, old-fashioned scare machine: a 1960s-set nightmare where domestic calm curdles into dread, and a single porcelain smile becomes a warning sign you can’t unsee. John R. Leonetti stages his best moments with patient tension and suddenly vicious payoffs, using shadowy cinematography and sharp sound design to make hallways feel too long, nurseries too quiet, and every creak a potential omen. It’s less about clever mythology than about the craftsmanship of fear—clean setups, effective jolts, and an atmosphere that keeps tightening like a noose. If you want deep character drama, it may feel thin, but if you’re on the fence and you’re craving a polished, relentlessly spooky night at the movies, this one delivers the goods.

Annabelle is clearly trying to spin a creepy, old-fashioned haunted-doll tale out of The Conjuring universe, leaning hard into demonic lore, new-parent vulnerability, and relentless “something’s in the room” tension. The problem is it often feels like a checklist of familiar horror beats—thinly written characters, predictable escalation, and jump scares doing the heavy lifting instead of genuine atmosphere. If you want the craft and slow-burn dread of The Conjuring, this may come off as a polished but generic spin-off that confuses noise for fear. Still, it has a few effectively staged scares, a strong central performance from Annabelle Wallis, and some slick production design—just don’t expect originality or much emotional investment.
