Spooks: The Greater Good (2015)

Spooks: The Greater Good is the kind of lean, propulsive espionage thriller that grabs you by the lapels and doesn’t let go, built around the deliciously unsettling idea that the people tasked with protecting the public might be the ones playing the dirtiest games. Bharat Nalluri keeps the film moving with crisp, stylish urgency—chases, confrontations, and ticking-clock dread—while Peter Firth slips back into Harry Pearce with the weary intelligence of a man who’s seen every kind of betrayal and still chooses to act. Kit Harington brings a grounded intensity as the protégé forced to navigate a world where loyalty is never simple, and every decision feels like it costs something. It’s not a meditative, slow-burn spy drama, and it won’t soften its R-rated violence, but if you want a watchable, expertly engineered jolt of British intrigue with real momentum, it delivers.

Spooks: The Greater Good is clearly trying to turn the TV show’s brisk, paranoid MI5 intrigue into a lean big-screen chase, with ticking-clock terrorism stakes and a mentor-protégé hook. The problem is it often feels like an extra-long episode rather than a proper film: the plotting can get contrived, character choices don’t always add up, and the whole thing plays a bit po-faced while still feeling oddly small-scale. If you want a slick, cinematic espionage thriller with coherent tradecraft and big-impact set pieces, this may leave you cold. But if you already like Spooks and just want competent pacing, a few tense moments, and solid work from Peter Firth (with Kit Harington doing his best in the deep end), it’s an easy enough watch.
