Minnesota, 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner investigates the case of young Angela, who accuses her father, John Gray, of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines is brought in to help him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.
What people think about Regression
Regression is a slow-tightening vise of a thriller, the kind that gets under your skin not with jump scares, but with the creeping dread of a community convinced it’s staring into the abyss. Alejandro Amenábar builds a chilly 1990s atmosphere where every conversation feels like it has a shadow behind it, and Ethan Hawke grounds the whole descent with a weary, human performance that makes the mystery feel painfully plausible. Emma Watson and David Thewlis add a brittle intensity, turning interviews and therapy sessions into psychological battlegrounds where certainty is the first casualty. It’s disturbing and deliberately paced, so it may not satisfy viewers craving clean answers or nonstop shocks—but if you like mysteries that unsettle you because they feel uncomfortably real, this one is hard to shake.
Regression is clearly aiming for a serious, 1990-set psychological thriller about the Satanic Panic era, using memory recovery and suggestion as its big thematic hook. The problem is that it often plays like a moody procedural that keeps promising a chilling conspiracy, then delivers its information in a way that feels more talky than tense and more familiar than surprising. Even with solid actors (Hawke’s grounded, Thewlis brings gravitas), the mystery can feel thin and the eventual “so what?” factor may leave you cold if you’re here for tight logic and escalating suspense. If you like slow-burn investigations and don’t mind a downbeat, debate-y approach to hysteria and false memories, it’s watchable; if you want a genuinely scary horror-thriller with a satisfying, clever payoff, this probably isn’t your night.
