The Public (2019)

The Public is the kind of earnest, big-hearted drama that treats a public library not as a backdrop, but as a last refuge—and a battleground for what we owe one another when the temperature drops and the system shrugs. Emilio Estevez stages the story like a civic-pressure cooker: compassionate librarians, vulnerable patrons, and a swelling wall of authority all trapped in the same space, with the tension coming less from violence than from pride, politics, and the simple refusal to look away. It’s relevant without feeling like a lecture, giving its ensemble (including Alec Baldwin and Taylor Schilling) plenty of compelling moments that land because they feel human, not schematic. If you prefer subtle, understated social drama, this one can be a bit on-the-nose, but if you’re open to an ambitious film that wants to start a conversation and still keep you engaged, it’s well worth your time.

The Public clearly wants to be a compassionate, socially conscious drama about homelessness, civic responsibility, and how institutions fail people when it matters most. The problem is it often delivers its message with a megaphone instead of letting the story and characters breathe, so scenes can feel clunky, melodramatic, and occasionally unbelievable—especially as the standoff ramps up. If you’re sensitive to “issue movie” speeches, hammy escalation, or a scattershot focus that bounces between too many players, this may test your patience. Still, there’s a sincere heart here, a solid central setting, and a few moments of genuine empathy that might land if you’re in the mood for earnest advocacy over subtle storytelling.
