Welcome to Marwen is clearly aiming for an uplifting, imagination-as-therapy story, blending live action with a doll-sized fantasy world to show how art can stitch a life back together. The problem is the film can’t settle on a tone: it lurches between whimsy, trauma, and broad sentiment in a way that feels disjointed rather than moving, and the screenplay often handles heavy material with a clumsy, overly sweet touch. If you’re expecting a grounded, respectful true-story drama, this may feel misconceived and oddly hollow, with long stretches that drag instead of building emotional momentum.
